“Boyfriend” to be on Catapult; Darkness and levity

I was excited to learn that my story “Boyfriend” (which is included in my forthcoming story collection from the awesome Alternating Current Press) has been accepted for publication on Catapult. It’s a story I had a lot of fun writing. It allowed me to articulate and analyze my feelings of despair, self-loathing and disillusionment at the time in an amusing way. This sounds sarcastic, but that mix of darkness and levity is the only way I can find to accurately process the world. Over the years, I’ve found that this is my “style” and maybe even my subject matter.

Most stories draw in some way from the writer’s emotional experience — certain stories moreso than others. I had written the story as a flash fiction some years ago, as an exercise in subversion. Some experiences later, I expanded it, filling it with something a lot more genuine.

Is it autobiographical? Absolutely not, narrative-wise. But yes, the feelings are all there.
