I just finished reading The Eyes of the Overworld. I am stunned. For three days I have experienced such adventures such as traveling through the Mountains of Magnatz, being hurtled back a million years on a mission to capture TOTALITY, and trudging through the Silver Desert, all along with Cugel the Clever, all the while laughing, gasping and wondering at marvel after unceasing marvel.
All fiction is fantasy, and the best fantasy of any kind reminds us that we are human — through feelings of joy, despair, and most of all wonder. To live life without wondering is to have no soul, or to not be “awake.” I thank Jack Vance for the gift of his writing. Next on my reading list: Cugel’s Saga.
